2007 was the year of the AK. It was the 60th anniversary of the now famous assault rifle being adopted for the use of the Soviet Armed Forces. For re-enactors and airsoft players, this too was a special year.

2007 is almost over. If you are a Russian themed airsoft player, then this year was a glorious one for you! We finally saw the end of negligence of AEG manufacturers towards our beloved AKs! Until this year we only had the option of an AK47 or AKS47. And even those were of the 1950s design. Or of course the Beta. Who actually uses those rifles today? No one! Especially since the Beta isn't a real AK per say. And it saddened me because springers and classics had correct bodies! Then we saw a modernized (with 'polymer furniture) AK74 make it out. Then a wooden AK74. And then an AKS74U, then a proper AKS74! Even RPKs! Type 56 and Type 56-2! And as the year is rounding to a close there are even more manufactures of AKS74s and AKS74Us. There is even a AKMS, released by Cyma of all companies (finally a gun thats not a clone form them!). There have been some releases of 100 series AKs, but they all lacked a proper folding stock though. Soon Unicorn will release an AKM74! This year we also so many great kits come out. So if you can't wait for the unicorn you can pick up a proper AK103 or AK104 kit! Or Even an AKMS kit!

I hope 2008 brings forth even more airsoft goodness for Eastern Block players! I would love to see an gas powered PK/PKM. Or at least a RPKS/RPKS74! Also an maybe a SVDS. A grenade launcher for an AKS74U. Maybe some Russian submachine guns. Or finally a Makarov! Or an SKS that isn't crap? There are also real Sniper class rifles that would be nice to see make it to airsoft.

For now, you can check out gunnerairsoft.com to see the many kits and complete AK AEGs that are already out.
